We don't expect you to put in much more addt'l time then you already spend on wso, just that you help keep an eye out for things while you are on the site and either take action yourself, or email Patrick, myself, or one of our assistants.
Guidelines specific to WSO:
1 they have to have been a member for over 1 year. 2 they must have at least a 5:1 ratio of SB to MS (with a min of 10 SBs) 3 they must have over 500 banana points 4 they must not get involved in political discussions, or if they do, they have to be very respectful 5 non-argumentative, not power hungrySome of the responsibilities included: Delete (or notify me of):
- spam (and block spam users),
- links to illegal/pirated content,
- full posts of copyrighted content,
- double posts, personal information,
- links to competitors/competing products, (this is subjective -more info will be provided)
- strong personal attacks
Additionally: site suggestions, recruiting new mods, homepage-content quality control, and keeping an eye on forums and users that need to be warned/blocked
I will provide more information after you have applied/been selected.

@Andy do we have a written policy on moderation? I know that Patrick and you guys have a set of informal guidelines on some level for when it's kosher to delete posts and when it's not, but I'm not sure if they're written down anywhere.
I'd drop the 5:1 ratio a little, I don't even have that... :-/
Also, can you send me the instructions for moderating? I generally don't touch anything unless it's what you said, racist or personal info.

Never thought about my ratio, but 5:1 is pretty stout if you've ever had a strong opinion about something. I'm at 680:113, so right over 6:1, but dayam.
I think you guys are really overestimating how 'fun' or 'cool' it is to be a mod. Its not like we have some super sweet intiation ritual or something ;)

Eddie, 5:1 ratio is definitely respectable. I mean, then you have guys like CompBanker who put ratios like ~24:1 to shame with their ~53.5:1 ratio.

TBH WSO is the most spam free website I have ever seen. But still spam gets in through users like Ratinamaze
I see more trolling than spam here. I'm not sure if that's the result of effective moderating or users actually following the rules though. Should I assume the site's been getting more traffic/posts since you're soliciting for applications?
We get rid of spam when we (on the rare occasion) see it, I think Pat has some super-cool, anti-spam system too. The trolling is generally allowed. The good trolls get a bunch of posts on their threads and are actually appreciated for highlighting some of the foolishness in the career search, like the "Goldman or bust" attitude. The shitty trolls just kind of fade away.
There is a little problem with users calling out other users on being trolls just for asking an easy question, but that seems to be fading a bit.

Site suggestion: when a new user signs up, have a seperate window / message for them that they should use the search function before posting.

Damn Ron Paul people. Until fall 2011 I actually had a very respectable SB/MS ratio. Those Ron Paul people have sent me literally 70 MSes in the last 6-9 months.

This is why I don't get involved in Political Discourse. Everyone gets very finicky over their own political beliefs and can't see the views of others as potentially fair and reasonable.

First time poster, long time lurker here.
I was told I would hear back about this mod position by the end of this week. Given that it's already Saturday, should I call WSO HR and follow up on the process on Monday morning? I thought the interview went really well and I handled all of the technicals, but now that I've waited for 5 days without a call I'm a little worried. I have recently received an offer from Bioware/EA to be their Mass Effect forum moderator (engineering background), should I somehow leverage that offer with WSO? Also, if I don't get this offer, will taking the CFA Level 1 exam help me break in next year?

Most of my MS has come from defending state school engineers and finding brilliant people in ordinary places.
You shouldn't regret taking MS for commonsense views. It's the nonsensical positions I've taken that I regret. :-)
