Vbulletin?

Have you guys considered moving to a VB based forum style? It's a lot easier to manage and whole heck of lot easier to read and operate. A lot more options too as far as forum functionality go for users.

If the admins/mods here haven't checked it out I really think they should. Pretty much the majority of forums out there use VB.

I see the point you are making but is it really neccessary? I mean, the current format differentiates WSO from all the other forums out there running on vBulletin. I don't really have trouble operating and reading posts on here in the first place, maybe others do but I haven't seen anyone raise that issue.Although, maybe I'm missing something.

I have a feeling at this point, at least, that making the move to a whole new type of forum would require too much time and money to make it feasible. Not a bad idea, in the long run, though.

WallStreetOasis.comcan you guys highlight certain features that vBulletin has that we don't ahve that you would like to see. I would prefer to build those in instead of making a huge migration over.

Critiques everything from background color to specific features are welcome.

Thanks, Patrick

I'm making a list of the features that VB has over the WSO forum. I'll get back to you shortly.

I've been a regular poster on several vBulletin forums for a long time (10+ years) and comparing it to WSO 1.0, vBulletin blew it out of the water. However, over the years here at WSO Patrick has built in nearly all of the features that Drupal was lacking. While not perfect, WSO as it stands today is a pretty solid forum. It's even better than vBulletin for the built in blogs by user and the ability to promote stories to the front page - it gives WSO a hybrid blog/magazine/forum feel, rather than just a straight bulletin board.

WallStreetOasis.comagain, I'd still love to hear how we could improve the forum to include some features from vBulletin we are missing...any one in particular you guys would like to see? or maybe change the look of the comments?

Are they hard to read?

Thanks

I'm making a list of everything and as I read this site more an idea pops into my head and I jot it down. Once i've compiled my list I'll paste it here. Just give me a couple of days, I have some really good ideas that I think you'll like and might even reconsider the whole VB thing.

feenansPatrick to be honest I really don't like the overall look of the forum. It looks quite outdated, have you considered a redesign? Maybe some webdesign studios can make a sketch/proposal for free and you will like it.

I'm totally up for looking at proposals, I just don't want a bunch of fancy graphics / icons. When you say "forum" do you mean the main general forum page http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums or within the threads or both?

In my opinion, readability is #1 for the message board. Can you give me examples of what looks like crap? I'm not a graphic designer...or if you can point me to other sites that you think look more up to date maybe that would help.

Thanks!

derivstradingActually Patrick, there is one thing that would help a lot:

Making the reply/comment box bigger. When you reply, especially when you quote, you only have like 5 lines of visible space before you need to scroll down and it makes it a bit annoying.

easy fix...say double the size so you have 10 lines?

Yeah that would be a nice fix actually.

You can just drag it down can't you?

Would be good to have a proper chat with link in site rather the one from that topic

WallStreetOasis.combigger comment box is on to do list...developers have been busy on jdOAsis.com stuff...they shoudl get to it this week

You can already make it bigger anyway though, all you have to do is drag the bottom right corner

This is fixed...comment box by default is now bigger....also coming soon....see my new thread in Site suggestions...

How about posting the link for a chat somewhere on the side of the main forum page? Rather than constantly bumping that old chat thread?
