When NOT to send a private message ...
Don't send me a private message when others can benefit form the answer. Post on the main forums instead.
I've had several great exchanges with people via private message. My thoughts: - A lot of the content was relevant for other posters, but they'll never get to see it. - We didn't get the point of view of any other posters that might know something about those topics.
Publish the worthy PMs (sensitize the info, of course, if necessary), share the love.
I've recommended this idea to CompBanker as well, but something you can consider doing if your get a lot of PMs is responding to them as usual and then creating a Q&A format blog post every couple weeks in which you post your communiques. Obviously some of the PMs will be more personalized, but you can just edit those to maintain anonymity of all parties concerned. Just an idea.
I'd tell the people that PM you to edit out the info they don't want others to see and post it on the boards. We see these posts pretty frequently (probably once every few weeks), but there are a lot of people that swing through here and never see them before they send a PM. Best solution I can think of :-/
Thanks guys. I might actually take up a couple of these suggestions.
Agreed with NR. Additionally, you should obtain the consent of the other user and make sure they see all of the content before publishing. This should be implied though.
