I am going through my first transition now, and I am curious why the comp is usually discussed in an "all-in" format. Isn't the bonus supposed to be discretionary or based on some formula depending on the performance (and determined at the year-end)? Why do we set the bonus amount at the beginning? Is it just for the first year?
