Best Option for HF Post-MBA

I am looking for advice on successfully transitioning to the hedge fund industry post-MBA. Currently investigating schools and have a preference for CBS, Wharton and Booth. My background is economic consulting and corporate finance at a bank/credit union.

When would be the best time to start reaching out to alumni? Prior to applying? Should I wait until gaining acceptance to a program before I start looking to build a network? Obviously once I'm admitted it makes it a bit of a "warmer" connection. Any different ideas on the best way to position myself?
