If I wanted to, can I find out how many assets under management, and what the performance was/is of a particular hedge fund? Say from tax reports or filings?

I've used 13F filings with the SEC for breakdowns of positions and percent allocations but I can't remember if there was an actual real asset portion. Try the SEC website's search engine, I've had pretty good luck with it.
13F filings are far from complete and can be misleading.
