Careers With the Quickest Advancement?
Where in finance is it most common for young people to rise to senior ranks quickly nowadays? I once met a guy who become a senior trader at a bank in his early 20s and launched a hedge fund at 27 starting with hundreds of millions in AUM (now at >5 Billion 20 years later). However, these stories of young successes are pre-2008 so what is the best path today that promotes quickly?
Whichever path that you found your strongest fit and are able to add most value quickly
I’m sorry but I personally find this type of advice quite unhelpful. “Work hard” “find what you’re good at”
What if you’re great at cleaning toilets and you do that assiduously? Only made a guy CEO once and that was at GS (Sidney Weinberg).
I will keep your opinion in mind, even when I didn't ask for it.
Pod
Probably equity L/S single manager if you want to launch your own fund. I haven’t seen many 35 year old former pod guys launching vs. quite a few ex- SM guys in the past few years.
Probably pod though if you want highest chances of success for running capital though though places like Coatue promote super fast so might be a bit of a question there.
What 35 year old SM launches have you seen? There is also some self selection process there because top SM investors can’t become PMs while top MM PMs can stay put and make decisions, so less reason to leave
