Crossovers Open To ER Background

I currently work in TMT ER with a rather broad coverage spanning multiple industries, forcing our team to ramp knowledge of various industries, supply chains, competitors revolving around our space including many private companies. I have taken an interest in GE/VC investing, too.

It seems like a crossover fund, focusing mostly on the public side but with some exposure to privates would be a good fit for me since the skillset would translate well from ER to HF/Public Equities investing. However, I would also get exposure to the private side as well and that it would be an easier story in case I wanted to make a move to full GE/VC compared to trying to jump directly from ER

I am familiar with the big names like Altimeter, Dragoneer, etc  where people have to have IB + PE/MBB backgrounds, but not as familiar with other firms in the space. I know one smaller firm that would be open to ER backgrounds and trying to learn more. Anyone have any suggestions?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it sounds like you're on the right track considering a crossover fund as a potential next step from TMT ER. Your broad coverage and understanding of various industries, as well as private companies, would indeed be valuable in a crossover fund environment. Here are some suggestions and points to consider:

  1. Leverage Your Current Network: You've likely interacted with various professionals in your role. Reach out to them for insights or potential opportunities at crossover funds.

  2. Research and Identify Targets: Beyond the big names, there are many smaller or mid-sized crossover funds that might value your ER background. Conduct thorough research to identify these firms.

  3. Highlight Transferable Skills: In your applications and conversations, emphasize your analytical skills, deep industry knowledge, and experience in evaluating both public and private companies.

  4. Consider Boutique Firms: Smaller boutique firms might be more open to diverse backgrounds and could provide a stepping stone to larger GE/VC firms later on.

  5. Utilize Online Platforms: Platforms like LinkedIn can be useful for connecting with industry professionals and discovering firms that align with your interests and background.

  6. WSO Networking Guide: Don't forget to utilize the Networking Guide from WSO Academy to refine your approach and make the most of your networking efforts.

Remember, persistence is key, and each conversation can lead to new insights or opportunities. Keep an open mind and be ready to showcase how your ER experience can add value to a crossover fund.
