Demystifying Alpha Capture Teams at MMHFs

Does anyone have insight into how alpha capture teams operate at multi-managers?

I understand they’re designed to extract and amplify alpha signals from across the platform — whether through aggregating trade ideas from PMs or identifying what’s working and recycling those trades more broadly. But I'd love more clarity on the following:

  • Where do these teams typically sit organizationally? Are they considered front office since they're revenue-generating?
  • Do they fall under central investment teams and are their members considered IPs?
  • How exactly do they work — are they copying trades from top-performing pods, if so how do they identify good/bad trades when hit rate ~50%
  • Do they have any sort of discretional investing capabilities from their own ideas?
  • How is compensation typically structured for these roles (e.g., base vs bonus, PnL-linked, etc.)?

Any insight from someone who’s worked on or around one of these teams — or even interviewed for a role — would be super helpful. Appreciate any thoughts.
