Electronic Market Making vs Portfolio Management

Hi all,

I am at a stage where I have to choose between the two roles.

  1. quantitative researcher - electronic market making in the credit space

  2. quantitative investment analyst - factor based equity portfolio management

I want to understand, which one should I choose, assuming equal interests in both the roles.

As I understand EMM in the credit space is not mature yet and is a growing field. However, quantitative factor investing might be more rewarding as there is a higher chance of becoming a PM, while one might remain stuck as a quantitative researcher in EMM for a long time. My assertions might be wrong here, as my understanding of the long term career prospects for both the fields are rather naive.

I have some understanding of what the work entails in both the fields. But I am clueless about the long term prospects. If someone can throw light on that, I will be grateful. Thank you.
