Fundamental Research Canvas Point 72

Hi - does anyone know if the Canvas Fundamental Researcher role is similar to the traditional Research analyst role ? If not what are the differences (impact, comp. ,exit opps) ?

More importantly, can't find anything about the team itself other than it's in Market Intelligence - any insights would be appreciated !

thx

It is not the same as the typical research analyst role at all. Canvas is Point72’s internal Channel check team. They produce reports on various sectors by talking to the same experts every month.

Not sure there’s a clear path to working for a PM. Would think not impossible but this wouldn’t really make it easier.

Don't know the comp ranges off-hand but they're like middle office for the pod teams if that makes sense (so obv lower). Helping put together research/DD on specific industries being covered by taking expert calls/doing deep dives for channel checks which is then fed to the analyst team. There's no path to an actual pod analyst seat, maybe 1 or 2 folks have made that jump (don't know) and if they did they're exceptions to the rule not proof that there's a path.

IMO if you want an actual research seat this is not the role to take and will more likely hurt vs help you going forward.

Seems a bit off that they mention Supply chain research. I would think that’s the equivalent of covering the supply chain industry as a research analyst? But from what you’re saying it’s gathering info to send to the actual research analyst who will decide on the final recommendation - Is that correct ?  That means no impact whatsoever on the investment process …

No it is not the same as covering any sector and thus your thinking is wrong. As others have said, this is not an investment role at all. You are not covering stocks or working directly with anyone who runs a portfolio. There is no path to getting to an investment role unless you take it upon yourself to network extensively and even then it’s meh. The base is like $70-90k btw.
