How should I follow up?

I got an offer for SA L/S at a good firm and they have given me 10 days to accept. Happy about it.

I finished case study round at another L/S and i would prefer it, but i havent heard back after ~8 days. The guy who interviewed me went for vacation but didnt email me yet. I felt like i did great on the case, got along w the guy.

how should I follow up here? idk if this is the end of the process for them or if there is another round, but I dont want to leave my other place hanging.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps you can take to follow up effectively:

  1. Immediate Follow-Up:

    • Send a polite and concise email to the interviewer or the HR contact at the second firm. Mention that you are following up on the status of your application and express your continued interest in the position.
  2. Reference the Timeline:

    • Highlight that you have another offer with a deadline. This can sometimes expedite their decision-making process. For example, you could say: "I wanted to follow up on my application status as I have received another offer with a deadline of [specific date]. I am very interested in the opportunity at [second firm] and would appreciate any updates you can provide."
  3. Express Gratitude and Enthusiasm:

    • Reiterate your enthusiasm for the role and the positive experience you had during the interview process. This reinforces your genuine interest in the position.
  4. Be Professional and Respectful:

    • Ensure your tone is professional and respectful. Avoid sounding desperate or pushy. Acknowledge that you understand they may need time to make a decision.
  5. Set a Reminder:

    • If you do not receive a response within a couple of days, set a reminder to follow up again. Persistence is key, but it should be balanced with patience.

Example Email Template:

Subject: Follow-Up on Application Status Dear [Interviewer's Name], I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to follow up on the status of my application for the [Position] role at company. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and the case study round, and I remain very enthusiastic about the opportunity to join your team. I wanted to inform you that I have received another offer with a deadline of [specific date]. While I am excited about this offer, my preference is to work with company, and I would greatly appreciate any updates you can provide regarding my application status. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Best regards, [Your Name]

By following these steps, you can effectively manage your follow-up process while maintaining professionalism and respect for both firms involved.

Do you have an HR contact for the other firm / someone else you've spoken to? I would email them (cc'ing the guy on Vacay and addressing them both) saying you enjoyed speaking with them and would love to know where you stand in the process given it's been over a week since your last contact. Express that you have an exploding offer in hand from another L/S firm that's driving some time sensitivity but def state that you would prefer their firm if given the option and that you're happy to hop on a quick call to discuss. Leave it at that.

You should have told them you had a competing offer the moment you went in for the case study. If you didn't do that, call/email them first thing on Monday and explain your situation. You don't want your first offer to fall through and risk it all on the second process coming through.

Either way, it's unlikely the second fund will rush anything on Thanksgiving week when everyone is busy with other things... so you might want to accept the first offer just to make sure if doesn't fly away.

I didn’t have an offer when I did case study + debrief. I heard back from the other place this Fri, interviewed w/ firm I want to follow up with last Fri.
