Is sm hf still possible from ER?
I know everyone prefers the ib+pe(+MBA maybe) route to get into a top sm hf, and I understand it has some merits beyond just prestige (teaches you to think about companies' actual economics, better modeling, PE's longer term investment horizon, etc) but do you still see a decent number of recruits from SS ER?
ER gives you public market knowledge and teaches you to research stocks, which is way more relevant, albeit with a larger focus on "trading"/shorter horizon and much more sentiment.
I think both are valid in terms of what you learn and how you'd succeed on the actual hf job, but do you see many people from ER making it to sm hrs after a couple years?
It’s obviously still possible, but it does limit you to a very specific subset of SM HFs. Some just don’t ever recruit from ER out of their own biases. Just do a quick LinkedIn search and you’ll see how rare it is.
