I think Lincoln abolished this sort of thing.

Or are you talking about buying and selling hedge fund advisory firms?

Yes. Instead of starting one from scratch, buying a small advisory firm.
I) Does that make sense? ii) Where would I find those firms?

Remember a small advisory firm is nothing more than a few people who have convinced a few know-nothings to allow them to invest their money. You won't find a website selling these firms. Best bet would be to get to know a few of these advisors and then see if you can buy into the partnership. You would never want to buy the firm and then take over the dueties. You'd quickly lose every client.

First, before you get to into this, how would you go about setting up a website like this? It doesn't matter if there is one or not, but this will pretty much be able to tell you if there is a market for this or not.

So how would you build a database of firms that are looking to buy and sell? Cold call basically. So you would be a telemarketer calling all the small hedge fund advisory firms and ask if they are looking to buy or sell their firm or another firm. Then you could call large hedge funds and ask if they would want to buy, and maybe even sell. With your results you'll create a database.

Then after you've gotten that part out of the way, you need to analyze supply and demand for the market of this type of service that your website will create.

As blackcleo pointed out, the market for the micro firms would be very small as you would most likely be losing their clientele after purchase. If anything, a merger would work, but then that isn't what you layed out. As you upscale from micro firms to just smaller firms, you could possible get a buyout to work, although it still most likely wouldn't be pretty unless you get a legal team involved so that they can't just have their clients leave you after purchase and then restart another firm.

Also, have you done research on other markets? Are there websites for any business types that are available for the same services but just different business type? say,... bars or something. This will really hint towards your answer.

But given the information above, I would say no there is not a website, nor is it a great idea to build one of your own.
