London: do "boutique" hedge funds exist?
One can find in London dozens of boutique investment banks, but I was wondering what the landscape looks like for L/S hedge funds.
For instance I know you can find plenty of AM firms in the $50M-$200M AUM range, but what about HF? Are there small players pursuing L/S strategies in London?
A few big London launches in 2015 that you can find online. Immersion etc.
Yeah, there are plenty. They're not going to be particularly easy to find for obvious reasons. Depends kind of on what you mean though. There are lots of *funds* $200M but they may be part of firms that are >$1b.
Plenty of L/S HFs at the aforementioned size in London. As alluded to earlier they're not making the front page of the FT, but some have had brilliant performance over the past few years. Much easier to be nimble at a smaller size.
Would you have any advice about the best way to find and approach them?
I'm assuming that you wish to approach you're interested in a role in that space? I got fortunate and found a role through networking, but I didn't come from a conventional background so that was the easiest route. I found luck in speaking to equity sales at local brokers (Numis, N+1, Liberum, Canaccord) as they often face off to the HFs at that size.
