Man Group performance

Anyone have any insight into what is going on at man group?

Their AHL business lost around 5 billion or so this year. They removed a number of front office quant researcher postings after they lost a significant amount in the trend following business. They had at least 7 or so listings and now have only 1.

Stock price is down 20% ytd. All quants are forced to go back to the office 5 days.

The head of discretionary recently resigned

Is the firm in as bad shape as people are making it out to be?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, there isn't specific information in the dataset about Man Group's current performance or internal changes. However, the context does highlight broader trends in the hedge fund and quant space that might provide some perspective:

  1. Quant Challenges: Many quant funds have faced difficulties, especially when their AUM grows too large, making it harder to generate alpha. Some funds have shifted to providing exposure to processes rather than delivering true alpha, which can lead to underperformance.

  2. Trend Following Struggles: Trend-following strategies, like those in AHL, can be volatile and are highly sensitive to market conditions. Losses in such strategies aren't uncommon during periods of market unpredictability or reversals.

  3. Workplace Dynamics: The push for quants to return to the office 5 days a week could be a cultural or operational shift, but it might also reflect broader industry trends where firms are trying to foster collaboration or control over their teams.

  4. Leadership Changes: The resignation of a head of discretionary could signal internal restructuring or dissatisfaction, but without more details, it's hard to gauge the full impact.

If you're looking for more specific insights into Man Group's situation, it might be worth exploring recent earnings reports, industry news, or reaching out to professionals in the space for firsthand accounts.
