It can be a very rewarding career, especially if you are working to further a cause you believe in. It's also very interesting work because you get to meet with a lot of different managers and learn about their thought processes. This is what endowments and foundations do- manager selection. If you're interested in allocation roles as a possible career, then you should definitely read Swensen's book, Pioneering Portfolio Management.
