No one's hiring because they are afraid to conduct face to face interviews, not because performance is necessarily bad. MM should mostly be neutral to the coronavirus. Although no one is every perfectly flat to all systematic risk, these platforms are probably the closest to the ideal. Some people made money, some lost money. The ones who made money should be hiring after work from home is abolished.
a lot of quants that were flat according to their internal risk models got absolutely crushed due to the rapidly changing correlations. But yes, the ones that did well (minority) can probably add headcount but they'll probably end up picking through the carnage from the cut teams as the hiring is easier.
