Networking with a Client PM from the sell side?

I’ve spent the start of my career on the sell side, now with a few years under the belt I feel the pace of learning has slowed dramatically and believe now’s a good time to start recruiting for HF positions. I’ve heard that the best way to attempt the move is to contact PMs/teams who your team has an existing relationship with.

Does anyone have experience on how to approach this in a sensitive way (ie not tipping off your boss that you’re looking to move on)? Feel like that’s a hard thread to needle when trying to network with clients.

Any advice would be much appreciated
