Seems like every guy who makes it to the top in the hedge fund world went to a top target or at the very least a semi target, either for undergrad or MBA. The only exception I can think of is David Tepper. Are there any other managers like him from a nontarget background who made it big?

There are a bunch. This bias you have is prob because you are too siloed within the Tiger cub world. There are many multi B HFs/LOs out there w non target founders

In credit land, Marathon, Knighthead, King Street, Avenue, Varde, and Guggenheim all have founders who went to non-targets.
