your post comes across as either a poor troll attempt or painfully uninformed.

People take point72 over banks like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley...not everyone does this of course and there are reasons why but in terms of difficulty to get into and reputation its not something you expect to be in the same conversation as Nomura lol.

Typically, if someone is competent enough to get an offer for Point72 as an undergrad, they'd have much better banking offers too. There have been quite a few threads on here between picking point72/citadel over Goldman, PJT even Blackstone etc. Point is the Nomura to P72 comparison is funny because I don't think anyone is ever picking between those two lol

edit: OP do you have both offers?

Was just wondering what opinions on point72 are? Is it a good place to start my career as opposed to a MM bank like Nomura? Any help would be appreciated.

This is a very generic question, too generic to be helpful. What are you trying to understand? Also, you are going to get a bunch of different opinions from people in all sorts of different careers and points in their career. Good place to start your career if you want to work in a HF? Yes. If you want to work in PE? Not the best. It has all the typical positives and negatives that have been talked about before. If you are more specific with what you are trying to learn I think people might be more helpful.

in no world would you choose nomura over point72, no matter what you want to do

I never said that, but I also don’t agree with you (at least in the general choosing an “ok” bank vs P72). I personally would take P72, but I’ve been working at a HF for 15 years so I’m very biased. But P72 (and other funds) train you a specific way. There are many paths where what you learn there won’t be as useful as what you could learn at a bank. It isn’t all about prestige or first year comp.

I realize the Nomura vs P72 sounds a bit crazy, but this person is either a troll to ask it this way, or a junior person just learning the space. Looking at their other posts it looks like a junior person.

My initial post was trying to highlight that the question isn’t useful and that if the person gave more info that others could be more helpful. You can answer the narrow “obviously take P72 what a stupid question” but that’s not helpful at all. Sometimes you have to realize that people don’t even know the right questions to ask and see if you can help them out.

These people should not be asking questions then. They should go out on their own and do some research first and come back with more informed questions.
Given one of these firms requires you to have world class researching skills, it’s not unreasonable to lament college students that are either too stupid or lazy to do their own research (WSO itself has a million threads on Point72)

A few things:

1) I generally agree that people these days are quick to ask instead of research and spend the time looking at the information that already exists. People are less likely to do the “hard” work

2) that being said, I was also 19 once (I think this person said they are a sophomore in college), and I was completely ignorant about the industry. Not everyone has the same background, connections, etc and some people also start later (in terms of researching the field). I know I wouldn’t have hired my 19 year old self, but that doesn’t mean this person is stupid or lazy.

3) asking questions is a form of research. I agree it was a bad question and that a lot of this info is available, but that’s what this forum is for.

4) I spend my time on this forum trying to help people. You might have other motivations. I think telling this person they are being lazy is helping them, but I also think guiding them toward what questions or research they should be doing is more helpful.

Anyway, I rather be patient with people here.

Yeah completely different industries, but a career at Point72 will kind of go like this:

They’ll give u 1 million dollars and give you a year.

If you make money then they’ll give you more funds to invest and keep you on.

If you lose money you’ll be fired.

Simple as that, it’s pure performance

you have zero clue what you’re talking about. don’t give advice then.
