Generally,

  • Pods: Direct reach out. Hit up all the BD offices with your resume and a pitch
  • SM: Recruiters (if your EB is top/credible) or your network/referrals. Have a pitch. Rarely direct cold reach outs can work, but form emails and blasting 100 PMs unlikely to work. Warm intro better.

Pods are pretty active right now, SM seem less so (going off recruiter inbounds I get currently), but pods want zero training talent so you have to make the case that you're ready day one

I can verify for a fact that MBA >> IB >> HF is done occasionally and successfully with the right background and skillset. If someone tells you otherwise they're wrong

Good luck!

Thanks! This is super helpful. How would you say the modeling skills are tested/valued differently between HF Pods and PE for example? For example, in the pods is the stock pitch more important, etc?

Modeling tests are not that common in HF. the case or pitch will require you to make a credible model to support a thesis with a valuation. The thesis and the underlying assumptions driving your forecast will be the most important element of the pitch, and the valuation itself is pretty boring. But someone putting a laptop in front of you and asking you to build an LBO in 2 hours is uncommon.
