Quarter Life Cross Roads

Hi everyone,

Quick background, was at T2 consulting firm, now at growth stage startup doing Data Science. I enjoy the job a lot but current comp and comp growth is just not good. Even though the company is doing well, I don't get enough equity for it to meaningfully improve earnings. I am at a cross-roads trying to figure out what to do and am exploring some of the data science roles (non-systematic quant) in finance.
1. L/S Alt Data Science at MM or SM. Are there any funds that are known to treat these guys ok? Does anyone know comp for the central data teams e.g., (Citadel Sector Data Analyst, P72 MI)

  1. Are the PE Data Science roles any good? The combo of consulting + DS seems like a good fit here

Any other ideas? This has been really messing with my head the past month where I don't feel like I am on track on to make enough money/support the lifestyle I would want.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems you're considering a pivot into the finance sector, specifically into data science roles within private equity or hedge funds. Here's some insight into your options:

  1. L/S Alt Data Science Roles in MM or SM Funds:

    • Funds like Citadel and Point72 are known for their data-driven approaches and could offer roles like Sector Data Analyst.
    • Compensation can be competitive, often including a base salary and a performance-based bonus. While specific numbers can vary widely, it's not uncommon for total compensation to be in the low to mid six figures, depending on experience and the fund's performance.
  2. PE Data Science Roles:

    • Private equity firms are increasingly valuing data science expertise to drive investment decisions and operational improvements within portfolio companies.
    • Your background in consulting and data science could indeed be a strong fit for these roles.
    • Compensation in PE can also be quite attractive, with the potential for significant long-term earnings through carried interest, although this can take several years to materialize.
  3. Other Considerations:

    • You might also explore strategic roles in fintech companies or larger financial institutions that are investing heavily in data analytics.
    • Consider roles that offer a clear path to equity or profit-sharing to align with your long-term financial goals.

It's important to thoroughly research each opportunity and consider the long-term potential, not just the immediate compensation. Networking with professionals in these roles and seeking mentorship can provide more personalized advice tailored to your skills and career aspirations. Remember, the right move will balance your need for a satisfying role with your financial goals. Keep exploring and don't hesitate to reach out to your network for insights.
