Reaching out to sellside analysts for their opinion on different pod teams?

Hi all,

I am currently interviewing with 4-5 different pods, with hopefully more interviews in the pipeline. My main concern right now is finding out which PM's have good reputations.

I recently networked with a sellside equity research analyst, who said that since they sell research to individual pods, they have some color on which teams are good. Is this true? Is it worth reaching out to more sellside analysts for their opinion on different pods?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, reaching out to sell-side analysts for their opinion on different pod teams can indeed be valuable. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Sell-Side Analysts' Insights: Sell-side analysts often have insights into various pod teams because they sell research to individual pods. They can provide valuable information on which PMs (Portfolio Managers) have good reputations.

  • Networking: Networking with sell-side analysts can help you gather more information about the teams you are considering. Since they interact with multiple pods, they can offer perspectives that you might not get elsewhere.

  • Candid Opinions: Speaking with sell-side analysts over the phone might give you a more candid view of their opinions compared to their written work. They might be more open about their views in a conversation.

  • Value of Relationships: Establishing a rapport with sell-side analysts can be beneficial. They can provide ongoing insights and updates, which can be crucial as you navigate your career.

In summary, it is worth reaching out to more sell-side analysts for their opinions on different pods. Their insights can help you make a more informed decision about which PMs and teams have good reputations.

I'm sorry but you have no chance through this way.

Sales people are normally the MDs/head of xxx spec sales, they are very good at what they do, know every PM/analyst in the sector across investment strategies.

If you are a random guy/girl with no value, hard for them to give out information like this.

If you have 1-2 years on the buyside then that would be different, they are your friends and they will help you with everything you need.

Or if you are in research, talk to your own bank's sales more and try to figure out.
