Start-up / Commodity Pool Operator

Is anyone working for a hedge fund structured as commodity trading advisor or a commodity pool operator and have knowledge on what are the costs and to set up a CPO?

Asking as I am considering to start something on my own and for several reason I think this would be the best structure to start.

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights on starting a hedge fund, which might be relevant to your interest in setting up a Commodity Pool Operator (CPO):

  1. Initial Costs:

    • Setting up a hedge fund can be quite expensive. One user mentioned that it could require $300k+ just to get the legal entities and structure set up.
    • Costs include legal fees, compliance, back-office processes, and other administrative expenses.
  2. Raising Capital:

    • Raising capital is a significant challenge. Investors now demand robust back-office processes and compliance, which adds to the cost.
    • Potential sources of capital include fund of funds, private banks, high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), and family offices. However, these investors can be less reliable and may redeem their capital quickly.
  3. Management Fees:

    • If you plan to charge a 2/20 fee structure, you might consider charging 1/4 of the 2% management fee upfront when investors subscribe to your fund.
  4. Alternative Options:

    • Some users suggested considering joining a multi-manager platform, which could provide the necessary resources, salary, and support to manage a larger fund.
  5. Legal and Structural Advice:

    • It's crucial to get the right legal advice and consider different options for your fund structure. Some users regretted not shopping around for better legal advice and paying the additional cost for a proper fund structure.
  6. Operational Considerations:

    • Using brokers like Interactive Brokers due to cost considerations, but be aware of their limitations in terms of capital introduction and customer service.
    • Taxes and the structure of trades (e.g., short-term trades) can also be a significant consideration.

For more detailed and specific advice on setting up a CPO, it might be beneficial to connect with professionals who have gone through the process or consult with legal and financial advisors specializing in this area.
