What exactly does it take to get to the >$1b AUM club? An incredible stroke of luck? Years of >30% gains? And about how many funds are this big?

Considering your name is hedgefundfreak, I'll assume you're interested in starting a hedge fund. Might be wrong, correct me if so. But here are my immediate thoughts:
If you don't have what it takes, will you give up now? If that's the case, your fund will never hit 1B AUM. And if you do have what it takes...you don't need us to tell you.
With all due respect, do you honestly expect a WSO member to give a straight answer to exactly what it takes to attain such a highly desirable goal? It's as kyleyboy explained: basically, exactly what you'd expect. If you want to discover more, you're probably going to need to do a search...of the forum and of your mind/heart/soul/whatever.
