Thoughts on Symmetry Investments?

Received an FT offer coming out of an advanced degree, and I don't have any prior experience in the rates trading space. Could people shed some light on reputation, compensation expectations, and anything else they may have heard?

I have seen the name mentioned a few times on this forum, but nothing in depth

Thanks for the answer. If you don't mind, have you heard anything about firm's culture? As office is half way around the world for me, I don't know much myself.

Also, what would you say the top rates/macro rv funds are? From previous posts it looks like Capula is also top tier

Below comment on niche and systematic is dead wrong. All rates trading will have some quant and some discretionary elements. Symmetry is one of the best discretionary rates funds on the street. Capula is a good comparable (a bit older and more mature), Tudor has a good RV pod, Welwing (started by ex-Symmetry guy), and Garda are the top tier non-multistrat macro RV shops.

Symmetry is niche. They're quant-focused, systematic rates trading - very different from discretionary equity hedge funds.

Rep is decent in fixed income circles but unknown outside that. Comp is probably fine for rates but won't compete with top equity pods.

No prior rates experience might hurt you - steep learning curve on bond math and macro. Dead end if you want to pivot to equities later. Take it if it's your best option, but keep looking.

Thanks for the view -- understood that they're niche and systematic. I have done some coursework on derivatives and options pricing and am not really shooting for a career in equities.

I guess what I'm more interested in knowing is what the career development opportunities there are there. I'll be joining with no industry experience, so I'm curious to know about what people have heard about longevity and opportunities to eventually take on risk

Saying this as if top equity guys get paid higher than top rates guys lmao
