Top Energy/Mining Funds
Does anyone have an idea of who the top energy or mining funds are? I don't mean energy trading, but more like funds that invest in equity or fixed income of energy or mining companies. I'm sure all the big hedge funds and asset managers have a desk that does this, but which are the best?
I can't think of any off the top of my head that invests exclusively in mining/energy, although I'm sure there are. The only major fund that is pretty active in this space that I know of is Passport Capital in SF. They combine top-down macro analysis with bottom-up security research and focus a lot on commodity stocks. Also, I think Alyeska in Chicago does a lot in this space as well.
I work for a resource fund, albeit a small one. The bigger ones are still around but not doing so well. Libra Advisors, Sprott, US Global are the big ones that come to mind
Resource Capital Funds, based in Denver, is a PE fund in the mining sector. X2 Resources, which is being run by Mick Davis and half of which is funded by Noble, is the new kid in town. I don't think they've spent a dime yet however.
