What are the hot industries to start in right now?

Hi Monkeys.

I am about to start a job at a good credit fund in July. They are asking for industry preferences. My long-term goal is to join a successful hedge fund (thinking L/S but would consider other strategies) and later start my own.

I want to know which industries are best to be familiar with for recruiting for hedge funds later, if any. While I think much of the interesting work might be in energy, I wonder if there will be any appetite for analysts who only understand north american energy? Similar for the metals/mining team, which obviously sees a lot of distress.

Conversely, while consumer and retail is a perennial target for many funds, are there too many analysts with that pedigree to really stand out from the pack?
