What is difference between VP/MD/analyst at HF?

Some firms have senior analyst (or just analyst), others have MD/VP/Sector Head titles. How to differentiate between what that means for responsibility, economics, investment decision authority? I know most HFs have the PM/analyst distinction, but what is the right way to think about continuum of seats in the middle (especially for an SM)?
