YTD returns
Somewhat publicised that C/M are flat/down last reported and the other MMs seem to be doing OK. Also aware many TMT slanted SMs haven’t been weathering the vol very well. Wondering if folks have anecdotes or best guesses around what median and upper quartile set of returns looks this year at a market neutral platform and whether you think it’s different from previous years? It feels as if being up YTD is already a feat in equities given how crazy things have been but on the other hand, no one cares if the environment is tough. The job is to make money all weather so i can understand if things are just normal and it’s foolish to think that way .

C was down like 3% and M 4% around mid april
haven’t seen numbers since but will soon next week (end of month)
baly/schonfeld were up a bit 1-3%
some of the more macro ones like bridgewater was like 7 or 8 iirc
That’s firm wide average returns so includes vol/quant/etc which have had good returns so far. Most fundamental equities I suspect are down outside of more defensive sectors, so individuaI team returns could be much worse than that number you’re seeing.
What exactly is a "defensive sector" in a market-neutral construct?
My fund is up around 2.3% YTD, but my guess is we just got lucky. Definitely not like years past given the insane polarization of US administration's economic policy, the overall beta of the market is definitely going to be higher for the foreseeable future. I personally wouldn't use the past as a reference to current performance especially in such a short time frame with so much happening within it.
Stats available now for april performance
YTD most funds are in the green now with exodus being at the top! de shaw and citadel gfi done well asw
