1st Round Associate 2nd Round Analyst?
I usually hear about interviews first conducted by HR/Analysts and second rounds / final rounds being conducted by those above them. However, I have a situation where the opposite has occurred and the second round is with an analyst.
This is for a small boutique bank and did not go through their formal recruitment process but got an interview due to alumni connections.
Any thoughts or reasons why this may happen?

You're reading way too far into this. Each bank does things their own way, especially at boutiques. There are no set rules.
