2nd yr Analyst looking for New Industry

Hi all,

I am a 2nd yr analyst in Healthcare industry M&A and just wondering how easy it is for me to transfer to a different industry at this point? The position I'm interested in is in Consumer industry M&A and given the fact that I do not have any experience in this particular industry, how transferable my knowledge/skills would be once I get this job?

Or better yet, do companies even hire someone like me for the position in other than Healthcare industry, or have I pigeonholed myself these couple years?

Personally, I'm not very interested in Healthcare and looking for a change.

Thanks for your inputs.

One, yes if you transfer jobs (lateraling) you can switch industries (it's very common to do so). If you switch out of banking, you are more likely to be in healthcare related fields just because you have the knowledge, but your skillset it readily usable in most fields.

Two, I know of many people who do third years in different groups etc, and people who goto the associate pool after their third. Quiet common, talk to your group head now.

Three, if you don't know what skills are transferable to a different position in the bank, you have problems. You must know people in other divisions, work with people in them etc. Aside from industry knowledge, all skills are transferable, the basics of comping, modeling etc. You will need a little while to get up the curve on the industry side, but the reason they hired you in the first place was your ability to learn and grow.
