A Few Questions (Need Help)
Hi everyone. I apologize in advance if I've posted this thread in the wrong section, because I'm new to WSO.
Anyway, I have a few questions to ask:
1) I'm a sophomore at UNC (non-target for the most part), and I didn't get into the Kenan-Flagler undergraduate business program. Should I switch my major to economics or computer science? Which one would be better suited for IB?
2) Due to a poor work ethic/procrastination (which I've now fixed) during my first few semesters at college, my overall GPA is now a 3.2. I'm trying my best to get it as close to a 3.5 as possible by the time I start applying for junior year IB internships, but am I screwed? Is it possible for me to compensate for a sub-3.5 GPA with relevant internship experience and proper networking, particularly in the eyes of BBs and elite boutiques?
3) I'm basically guaranteed an internship at a small boutique investment bank (specializing in real estate) in NC like an hour from where I live. The position is unpaid, but it's not more than 30 hours a week of work, and at least 90% of that is working from home. I interviewed with the MD, and although he's planning to get a bunch of other interns, he said I'll get to spend more time working directly with him and will most likely act as a sort of "team leader" for the other interns. What are your thoughts on this? Will this experience help me get a BB/elite boutique internship after junior year?

I'd go with econ. CS is also harder, which will make it more difficult to raise your GPA. Have a good reason for why you're not in Kenan Flagler for interviews.
Sandbag. Make sure you take classes that can raise your GPA, and hopefully you can put off some of the harder classes until after internship recruiting (or during it). Yes, it's possible to get an internship with a sub 3.5 GPA but do your best to get it up to 3.45+ so you can round up, assuming your school lets you round like that.
Yes it will help. Certainly can't hurt, but nothing is guaranteed.
Finally, I have no idea what's a "good" GPA at UNC, but a good way to partially compensate is to network and make a good impression prior to recruiting.
