b2 is actually right. People in product groups barely run an analysis on comps. I'm working in a product group, and there is modeling involved but thats just to show the clients.
Are you saying that they are merely giving you the assignment to test you?
Generally if someone gives you something technical, they already know the result or expected outcome. They would have to trust you quite a bit to rely on you for crucial data, if you've only been there for a few weeks.
