Advice to a 3rd Year Consultant who wants to get into IB/PE

I've been in financial consulting for the past three years but my dream/goal career is in PE/VC which is why I'm trying to break into IB/PE. I have a background in Engineering and didn't realize in school that I wanted to do something finance related so didn't pursue any IB internships etc. I've been trying to switch into our M&A practice but the bench is too deep.

Is my only move at this point going back to school for my MBA and try to get an internship? Any advice/recommendations/mentorship would be greatly appreciated!
