Alumni recruiting for his IB firm

So this alumni--who runs a MM IB firm--reached out to my university for a summer intern vacancy at his firm. I have already submitted my application.

My question is, should I shoot him an email saying something like: Hey I am highly interested in the position you posted last month on Career Services. I have already submitted my application. Is there anything else I can do to position myself better for the job?

Yes, I would recommend you do so, but just ask for an informational interview instead. When you speak with him, be sure to get a good feel for how to answer the question "Why X firm?". Additionally, you can always sneak in "How can I best position myself?" at the end of the chat.

Yeah, regardless of the position, consider it more of a networking opportunity. Ask him about his experiences: how he came to his firm, what his school experience was like, hiring exp, etc.

Just don't come off as someone who is using him to get at the position. Make him a connection, someone who you can ask for advice and not just job related info.

"History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme."

Sorry for the naive question: how would you construct an email asking for an informational interview at this stage?

"I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature."

Just do it the same way you would write any other info interview email: introduce yourself, mention your interest in investment banking and maybe a short blurb on past experiences, and express your interest in the position and ask if he might have some time to give you some color on it.
