A&M/AlixPartners/FTI vs. IB Restructuring
Can someone explain the difference between the work that places like A&M/AlixPartners/FTI do vs. IB Restructuring? Also, does anyone have any insight on the lifestyle, comp, etc. at A&M/AlixPartners/FTI and if it i hard to move to the buy side from one of those places after a number of years?

I believe places like Alix Partners, A&M and Zolfo Cooper mainly focus on the operational side rather than financial side in terms of restructuring, so the difference is pretty significant.
No idea about opportunities on the buy side, but I am guessing there are definitely opportunities for operational turnaround wiz.
Just my 2cents.
FTI is primarily operational turnaround but I know that A&M/Alix do both op and financial. People tend to move from the Big 4 accounting firms to these advisors but I haven't heard anything about their exit opps.
If you are awesome at restructuring/turnaround, you'll get places and Alix/A&M/FTI can certainly be a good vehicle.

Thanks for the info. I saw that link, but was wondering if anyone had anymore insight on the lifestyle like travel, hours, etc. compared to IB and if A&M/AlixPartners do more than just operational restructuring.
I have some friends in A&M, they are 100% travel and 100% on client site.
I talked to a distressed/turnaround PE partner about this exact topic last year. His opinion was that you develop a strong skill set at these shops, but restructuring IB is ideal, followed by any kind of banking, then these shops along with MBB (provided the MBB applicant has worked on turnaround engagements).
