An evening in IB as an Intern in London

Today is currently my last day at my firm for my internship. I am supposed to finish at 6PM due to HR policies for the last day. At 5:23PM my VP shows up and tell my analyst that he needs help for some 'urgent' list, looks at me packing my stuff on my desk, cleaning my computer and says - 'XXX you'll help your analyst on this one, I need to finish few things and send few emails before I can tell you what I need from you'. Five minutes later the VP leaves the floor and grabs a coffee at the nearby coffee shop - I guess he couldn't have told us what to do so that we could start the list.

It is currently 6:36PM - Can't start the task as he hasn't given any instruction, waiting patiently in the office. He is on his phone - definitely not working by the looks of it. Seems like I will have to pull an all nighter the last day of my internship and cancel all my plans for tonight - welcome to the world of Investment Banking.

Note that I am very close with my analyst, I wont let him down tonight hoping he will go bat for my return offer.

Not sure how I should take this, whether he does that just to show me how miserable he can make my life (mentioned that I was going for dinner with my GF as my internship is done) or he wants to make sure that I will be committed when returning for FT?

Update 1: 7:40PM - still hasn't updated us on what to do - not sure if there is actually something to do. Update 2: 9:11PM - VP left the office, we got our instructions by email. Aiming to be done by 1AM

Why don't you literally just go over to him as soon as you saw he was back at his desk and talk to him. Its in both your interests to give and get briefed on the work?
