AN3 without modelling experience
I'm couple months in as AN3 but have not hold the master of a model. I've helped here and there for couple of projects but never really to an extent I went deep on the models.
I've seen someone with a similar experience, but not sure if this even is acceptable for PE when I'm trying to exit.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, not having deep modeling experience as an AN3 can be a concern when targeting private equity (PE) exits, especially for roles that emphasize technical skills like LBO modeling. However, all is not lost. Here’s what you can do to address this gap:
Take Ownership of Models Moving Forward: Proactively seek opportunities to lead on modeling tasks in your current role. Let your team know you're eager to take on more responsibility in this area. Even if it’s a smaller project, owning the model will help you build confidence and skills.
Leverage External Resources: Consider enrolling in financial modeling courses to sharpen your skills. The WSO Elite Modeling Package, for example, offers comprehensive training in LBO, DCF, M&A, and other critical modeling techniques. This can help you bridge the gap and demonstrate your commitment to improving.
Highlight Other Strengths: If your modeling experience is limited, focus on other aspects of your skillset that are valuable in PE, such as deal experience, client interaction, or industry knowledge. Smaller PE firms or middle-market funds may value these skills more than pure technical expertise.
Practice on Your Own: Use templates or case studies to practice building models from scratch. The WSO platform provides access to 27 financial modeling templates, which can be a great starting point.
Network Strategically: When networking with PE professionals, be transparent about your eagerness to improve your modeling skills and your proactive steps to address the gap. This can show initiative and a growth mindset.
While modeling experience is important, many PE firms also value a well-rounded candidate. By taking these steps, you can position yourself as someone who is actively working to overcome this challenge.
