another networking question

So I have been trying to meet a VP at this firm when I was in his city two times. Both times he said he was unavailible to meet and I asked him to meet a third time recently and he said he was unavailible again.

I am trying to get a feeling of is hes just too busy, or just doesnt want to meet with me. Should I ask him for a phone conversation sometime? Would I be being too pushy?

Why are you trying so hard to meet this person? You should just go for the phone interview and work the network from there. There is honestly no real reason to want to meet with someone, instead of a phone meeting - I mean if the person suggests it, then run with it, but if you are making the request, always start with the phone call as it is much more convenient and less invasive. Also, do you live in the same city, or near it, or are you planning to travel there just to meet with the VP (please say it is either business related or you live near there and not the latter option). Either way, I think your best bet now, as you've already asked for 3 meetings is to assume he is just very busy (which is very possible), give him a week or two, and then drop him another line. If he is still responsive, ask him if he'd be free for a phone call, and in the future, unless they make the suggestions, lead off with a phone meeting request.

I generally send out emails like "Let me know what your schedule is like later this week so we can work out a suitable time to hop on a call" etc., which avoids the whole "oh hey I'm busy right now, try another time" over the phone thing.
