Slightly disappointed after what I thought to be a great interview (didnt network though). Benefits and downsides of going FT without interning there?

Isn't this a good thing? I mean isn't the entire point of an internship to get a full time, and if you actually want to work at that company, getting an FT offer is fantastic.
If they want me for full time, why do you think they rejected me for the internship?
Not sure when you applied, but I heard many firms were essentially full for their summer 2018 classes as of October 2017 - some even earlier. That could definitely be it and they might just have not had room. HR bureaucracy can cause more trouble than you would think and it could have been despite liking you they simply couldn't make a spot this late.
Reiterating what was said above; the point of a summer internship is to get a full time offer (and I guess to try out the job and see if you like it), so you just removed any chance of a bad summer performance killing your fulltime chances.
If it's a stellar firm, you can take the offer and not look back; if not, depending on how much time they gave you to accept, you can shop it around in the fall with other banks after doing something else for the summer.
A possibility is that they want to incubate talent (re: give back to the community) for the summer role, who they may or may not have plans to convert into fulltime. Whereas you, with potentially more experience and a solid handle on things, don't need that summer as much as someone else.
Is this RBC? I've heard of them doing this before for two programs. Equity Research and a Capital Markets guy too. One was SF and one was NYC
No it was not RBC. I don't think the spots were already full. There were superdays on the 21st, 26, and 28. I interviewed on the 21st.
So after following up with the recruiter, all I need to do is apply in fall 2019. She says I will not need to reinterview. I am assuming i will get the job if i want it, unless i mess up my spring2018 semester too badly.
I am currently searching for more opportunities for summer 2018 internships, but i am definitely glad that i wont be unemployed out of undergrad.
