Applying for IB jobs while interning this summer
Background:
Currently interning this summer in audit/tax for a big 4 firm. Had an internship last summer with VC firm as "summer analyst" and had fair amount of deal experience. Non-target. Decent GPA. Graduated this past spring.
Been back and forth for a while between Big4/IB but am now realizing that I 100% want to work in IB. Obviously it would be really tough to interview with any banks at all during this summer because I have to be at my internship every day.
Any suggestions on how to go about making my summer as productive as possible to set me up for applying for IB jobs at the end of the summer/internship?
Your biggest hurdle, and what you need to spend a lot of time thinking about how to answer, will be why you left a transactional role in VC to go to audit/tax when you want to do banking. That screams non-commitment and a lack of understanding of banking. Not saying that that applies to you, but every interviewer will think that and ask you right away. Just something to think about. Good luck!
I had committed to the Big 4 internship prior to the VC internship & there weren't any full-time opportunities with that firm. By the time I started looking at FT IB openings, FT recruiting season was over so I just focused on finishing school as I already had a commitment for this summer. I would say it's more of me wanting to honor my commitments rather than me having a lack of understanding of the banking world but I could be wrong.
Anyways, thanks for the response.
That makes sense. I was only pointing that out because I wanted to give you a heads up of what will come. Good luck!
