Applying to SA positions

Hello fellow primates,

I am truly curious. Is there any point in applying to hedge funds, consulting firms, I-banks or PE firms without a referral? Won’t most places not even read your resume if you aren’t referred? Or is this a myth and does everyone get an interview after passing a hirevue?

I have only applied to places where I could get a referral from an MD or VP. I would like to know if I should broaden my scope.
