If you did really well at an interview but was not made an offer for reasons beyond your control, is it appropriate to ask your interviewer to refer you to other opportunities?

If they didn't make you an offer... why would they refer you to other places and want them to make you an offer?
Actually I've had this happen. It was for an ER position way above my qualifications. I was lucky just to get the interview. They/the MD liked me, but they decided to pass on me, which I expected, b/c I was just way too underqualified and they weren't in a rush to hire. I still talk to the MD a year later and he's given me a couple referrals. However, major caveat, I think it is a rare situation that is largely a funtion of the MD just being a super nice guy, among other factors.
