Associate Investment banking interview with no technicals

Can you help or let me know if this is good or bad sign? I had a first round interview for investment banking associate with global bank. The interview was 1 hour with the managing director. He didn’t ask me any technicals. We just chat about industry trends and my thoughts. At the end he said we will keep in touch.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for interviews at the associate level to focus less on technicals, especially if you're coming in with prior experience or an MBA. At this stage, the emphasis often shifts to assessing your industry knowledge, strategic thinking, and cultural fit. Here are some key takeaways:

  1. Good Sign:

    • The MD likely assumes you already have the technical foundation required for the role, especially if your resume reflects relevant experience.
    • A focus on industry trends and your thoughts suggests they are evaluating your ability to think critically, stay informed, and contribute to high-level discussions—key traits for an associate.
    • Ending with "we will keep in touch" could indicate interest, though it’s not a definitive sign of progression.
  2. Neutral/Bad Sign:

    • If the MD didn’t probe deeply into your background or skills, it might mean they’re still undecided or using this as an initial screen.
    • Lack of technical questions could also mean they’re reserving those for later rounds or other interviewers.
  3. Next Steps:

    • Be prepared for potential follow-up interviews that might include technicals or case studies.
    • Continue to refine your understanding of the industry and the bank’s specific positioning.
    • Send a thoughtful follow-up email thanking the MD and reiterating your interest in the role.

Overall, this isn’t necessarily a bad sign. Many WSO threads highlight that fit and industry knowledge often outweigh technicals at the associate level. However, it’s crucial to stay prepared for any subsequent rounds.
