Are there examples of associates making a lateral transition during their clawback period? Is it "market" for the hiring bank to make you "whole" for the signing bonus since you'll have to pay it back?

I've seen this happen. And the answer is yes to both. Rationale for making you whole is they are probably looking to replace someone who probably left money on the table (at least as far as that firm is concerned). If they want you bad enough, make them pay. It should be a much sweeter deal if you are planning on moving. But... Why are you moving? Make sure your move makes sense. You are right to be concerned about moving too quickly. Should be a REALLY good reason: moving from very small boutique or non-target city to BB. Not from one BB to another BB.
