Associate trying to get me fired - imminent resolution needed
Associate I work w/ - she hates me.
Wlays looking to pinpoint mistakes that often times are blatantly her fault.
Was advised to insist that there is a paper trail disproving the claims.
Associate is now methodically building a paper trail of emails of her "pointing out mistakes that have occurred multiple times.".
Most of these alleged mistakes are simply the associate giving (purposefully) unclear directions or just blatantly lying (there is no mistake).
Appreciate the input. Appreciate WSO.
That’s insane…but have you sat down with her and very directly addressed the situation? A lot of times people are too much of pussies to address this stuff face to face and once you do it they’ll back off.
Mate why did you even bother to start this thread. If you have pull with the seniors of course get her fired. She clearly isnt an asset to the firm if she can't understand who to be friends with
You work in a toxic environment and she’s clearly bitter about something, good news is every bank is hiring
I've never heard of this happen. Banks need people who can work fucking hard.
Maybe you actually do suck at your work? I read posts on this forum and question if any of these posts are people who actually worked at EB or BB IB analyst positions.
Every investment banking analyst I know, got completely murdered in terms of hours / workload.
Maybe you are not actually holding up weight to the standards the bank wants.
IB hour / abuse standards are really fucking something else man. You are paid 200K not to look pretty, but to be the biggest bitch.
You do not hear the stories, but every analyst I've spoken to had hell stories, at a legit shop (top BB / top EB)
Posts on WSO are not representative of Investment Banking IMO at all. It's like 90% is high school students who never stepped foot in a investment bank, and shills from Big 4 who think they're equivalent to Goldman. lol.
IB at BB / EB is suppose to be hell - why the fuck else are they paying you 5x more than the average income at 21? Why the fuck does majority of the class leave ?
Does sound like a very toxic environment tbh-- my suggestion is to stop making fucking mistakes, and realize your in investment banking, not some chill corporate finance gig paying you 60k/yr.
Again, I'd like to reiterate, every 1st year analyst I know, got completely absolutely murdered in terms of hours / workload. Like abuse after abuse, to the point it is fucking psychotic.
That is investment banking, not the bullshit the shills here talk about.
My advice is stand your ground. Learn. Ask questions. Stop making mistakes.
Fuck off, douche

Did you ask her out in an email?
nah shes beat
No. Im gonna fuck her next week. There is no other option but to be dually malicious
Make sure to wrap it up my man
Sounds more like A2A to me. No MBA assoc I know has this level of insanity in them as A1’s.
Holy fuck you went to the CEO? Keep us posted.
Was in a similar situation a few years ago. I have a consulting background (MBB) for a little over 2 years before going to a firm that was terrible. I have an unconventional background didn’t start college until I was 24 & I went to a target UG (think Ivies not HYP known for taking unconventional students), top MSF program right after.
Left consulting due to travel, I had just gotten married, and I wanted to do my EMBA. Got hired by a 3rd tier PE shop and it was miserable from day 1. Told them during the interview process I was going to do my EMBA part time and that I was already accepted and committed to doing my EMBA and that it was weekends only. They said it would not be a problem since it was a weekend program. There were numerous red flags prior to joining and joining.
1 - prior to my first day I asked about work attire as consulting is normally business casual. During my interviews everyone was in slacks and a button down. I was told prior to my first day numerous times attire was business casual and I showed up my first day and got a lecture from two idiot associates about how we all need to be in suits and ties & to “dress for the job you want”. I pointed out to this idiot that the partners in this firm dress business casual. I let them know that a VP and a MD told me business casual & showed him the email. This was the start of the end for me and I knew if my first day was like this it was time to keep looking for a job. This associate told everyone in the firm I had a bad attitude.
2 - first day one of those associates goes off at lunch about how he put in his two weeks and they begged him to stay and how much the firm sucks. He went off on me for hours about how he never interviewed me and if I was working for him, he needed to interview me. FYI we are all associates and all the same age. If anything, I actually made more than him and was told I only answered to the VP. Huge red flag but this same associate made my life miserable for 6 months
3 - I had class my third weekend at the firm. I sent numerous emails stating I had class those weekends. I am in class and during my lunch break I have 20 missed calls from my office from both associates asking where I was. They even went to apartment to look for me. Huge red flag! Keep in mind we had no actual work to do that weekend these associates liked to pretend that they did work at the office on weeks aka "grinding" as they put it. They goofed off and watched sports. You would have thought I started WWIII though. I got a huge lecture on Monday from the MD who let me have it saying how I am a “trouble maker” and a “dumb kid” FYI I am 29 at this point. I kept a paper trail of all emails & the MD tells me these emails mean nothing and unless I get a response I am expected to show up on weekends and help.
4 – The same MD pulls me into his office 2 months into this roll. He asks me how I think I am doing and I give a very vague answer “it takes time to be fully integrated into an organization”. He berates me for over an hour about how these two associates claim they are having to do my work & everything I do has errors in it. The guy claims I have an awful worth ethic which I told him “you have no clue what you are talking about here are emails and that’s impossible because I have never been given any actual work to do except some asset management and to put together a few slides from some prop companies. It’s cool if you guys just want to pay me to collect a pay check.” I did come from consulting but I know how to put a deck together and a LBO. I always had high evaluations. Regardless I get berated for an hour I stated my case
At this point I started looking for a new job. Here is what I got out of this situation if someone has a target for you they will get you fired. They have more clout than you due to colleagues and superiors know them. It does not matter how hard you work you are done.
This is an abridged version of the story but the partner who hired me started harassing me after the associates said my work had a ton of errors. Issue is these guys never checked my work. Also these guys were politicking to get me fired from day 1 sometimes coworkers have issues with people for no reason and I could hear them in our conference room finding ways to get me fired with that partner. I knew my time was numbered and ironically I saw my job posted on linkedin and when I questioned it they said “we are growing” I just rolled my eyes and said I can hear you in the conference room my cube is next to it.
At that point the partner starts calling me after 10 pm telling me I better be running models and that he needs XYZ done by 5 am. Looking back I was incredibly nice to these guys but for whatever reason they did not like me and probably too respectful. Some of it was jealously for a few reasons and some of it was the guys are just POS.
Eventually I did get another offer at a mega fund from networking that I started pre this job. I had connected with a few guys told them this job was not working out & kept a paper trail of the situation. I gave two weeks but the situation was so hostile that I left immediately and said I thought staying here another two weeks would not be a good idea and left a letter on my desk. Guys where so dumb they actually paid me for two months. I will say it was stressful I am newly married, just bought in a coop in NY. I needed the job and the pay check.
What goes around comes around the industry is too small especially in NYC. I get asked by my LPs what I think of their firm because even though I do not have it on my linkedin or resume people still knew I worked there for a few months because the guys I worked with there still say they know me.
What happened to those guys?
The partner who was a complete douche emailed me a dozen times after I left and I never responded. Mainly asking for favors and introductions. I got a bunch of texts and never responded. Not really interested in having coffee with a complete POS who lacks the ability to realize every firm needs someone to blame. Guy is probably 100lbs overweight now and a raging alcoholic. I have seen him at bars plastered over the years.
One of the associates who was a complete prick got fired a year later went to another firm and got fired after 6 months for being a douche and has been fired from 5 other firms I know of and left NYC to get into tech. He no longer works in the industry, recently got divorced, and is unemployed.
The other associate is still there and in almost 7 years he is still a senior associate. Others have been promoted to MD and partner and he is still around. He has tried to leave & I still to this day get asked about him and tend to give him poor reviews.
Moral of the story
You can't please everybody and some people just will never like you. In this case these associates felt slighted a 3rd associate was being hired. It only takes one bad review to ruin a job. What goes around comes around & it’s a small world and when people say never burn a bridge I say BS I will burn a bridge while I am on it if you wrong me. It is a dog eat dog world and if someone is a jerk you have to throw your weight around. I will say I have kicked both those associates while they are down especially when I get asked an opinion. Is it petty who cares do not be a jerk. I now work at a portfolio company (fintech) that I got from the megafund I worked at as we were invested and I spent so much time there. Everything works out for a reason too.
