Background check worries
I recently got an offer (and accepted) for a spring week, however I realise now that I may not have been entirely truthful on my CV.
I did not do this intentionally, but here is the issue: Im an international student, got a gig as a student ambassador at uni. However I couldn't be at uni during the start, so I wasn't to be employed until I reached uni. I had plans to arrive in November, so a senior of mine advised me to still keep it on my CV, as I would arrive in November and start. In October end, my family got covid and we decided I wouldn't go during term 1.
Now I realise that the bank will be doing a background check on me, and if it asks my uni about employment I could lose the SW. I'm really worried right now- what should I do?
Seems like a simple misunderstanding. If you submitted that CV under the impression you were to begin a position that has now been cancelled due to Covid (or whatever, as long as you weren’t fired) it should be fine. It would be a different story if you wrote down anticipating a position you hadn’t been offered yet, or wrote about it as if you had started the position already.
Thing is, before my AC they asked for my latest CV and I sent them basically the same thing, with one update of some insight day I attended
Honestly wouldn’t sweat it. Again, if you submitted the CV while under the impression you were to begin the position (and the start dates reflect that you were to begin in the future, i.e. you didn’t lie and say you had started already) they won’t care. Did you talk about it in your interview or anything? Assuming not since you hadn’t actually start yet
I think you need to tell someone about this and layout the timeline in an honest way. DO NOT let them find out by other means, it has to come from you. If it comes from you it's 10x more "forgive-able" than if they find out by other means.
That’s exactly what’s been on my mind as well, that I should call HR and hope they let it slide. Only thing is it’ll make me seem like a massive moron (rightly so) since I missed such a huge error on my CV
You're just going to have to find a way to overcome that "moron" fear and tell them. You simply do not want them to find out from other sources. Keep in mind that not only will that make you look bad, they will also just call you one day and rescind the offer, that's it, no appeal, no chance to tell your side. So don't start thinking that "I'll just talk my way out of it when they find out" - they'll simply rescind and cease communication, the opportunity won't be there.
Are you sure that they are doing a background check for a spring week? Don't think I had one back when I did my one
I honestly don’t know - they haven’t sent me any background check form or anything but I got the offer a few days before Christmas so who knows. I’m worried about the chance they do do it.
I get that a spring week is insignificant in the long run but I’m from a non target and it’s a huge deal for me right now, hence the worrying
I honestly wouldn't worry about it, and wouldn't bring it up unless asked. If you bring it up, you're just hoisting red flags yourself. It's not even that big of a deal lol.
