Baird Govt & Defense Group Insight

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into Baird's Government & Defense group in DC. I just applied to their 2024 SA program and was hoping to find out how they stack up against other MM in terms of deal flow, exit opps, culture, etc.

Most Helpful

Very strong group. The two main MDs (Jean and John) are probably the best MDs in the MM government services sector and make it rain. You'll get great M&A reps there. Culture is solid among the juniors and seniors, but exits are lacking (group as a whole discourages recruiting for PE).

Deal flow is mostly services. They do a range of transactions and you would see some HC, tech/cyber, consulting, etc. G&D is a wide-reaching group.

I know they have a good relationship with Carlyle. They like internally promoting, so try to discourage exits at assoc level and up, but if you are at the analyst level and want to leave, they will help set you up with PE contacts.

Awesome group, really good people. Probably the all-around best IB group in DC/MD/VA. If you're interested in A&D check out KippsDesantos as well. I think Jefferies also has an A&D group in DC, as well as Houlihan. Though Houlihan's top bankers are now at Baird.

PE exits aren't massively wide-ranging, but there are a lot of awesome Corp Dev roles with the major Government Contractors around the beltway.

Second this, if you are interested in anything at the intersection of government and finance this is a great place to start your career. Also great if you want to be a career banker as I know they like to promote from within.

Jefferies ADG is in Charlotte, and HL ADG is between DC and LA (although the lead rainmaker of the group left recently).
